The Liverpool Public School Playground Upgrade reimagines the school’s outdoor environment as a diverse and engaging landscape that supports play, learning, sport and social interaction across all age groups.
Set amongst the school’s existing native trees, a naturally themed wild play zone encourages exploration, imaginative play and connection with nature. This is complemented by multi-purpose play equipment and a revitalised sports precinct incorporating a running track, soccer field, badminton, volleyball, T-ball and handball courts.
The site’s natural change in level was embraced as an opportunity to create a series of linear sandstone seating terraces, forming informal amphitheatres for outdoor learning, gathering and spectating. These level changes also provide a natural separation between active sports and playground areas, allowing multiple activities and age groups to comfortably use the landscape at the same time.
The result is a dynamic and inclusive school landscape that transforms the existing topography into an asset while creating greater opportunities for active play, outdoor learning and everyday interaction.

Our approach to wild play places nature at the heart of the experience. Natural landforms, creek beds, boulders, timber, sand and native planting create an open ended landscape that encourages children to explore, climb, balance, imagine and discover, fostering creativity, confidence and a meaningful connection with nature.
